Creating Your Own Culture
Partially related to the free-media problem, our culture is increasingly being re-defined by large corporations.
How so?
Corporate Culture comes from:
- Commercial TV
- Commercial Radio
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Blockbuster Movies
- Pop music
- Advertising
- a loss of community-based values
- a thirst for market-driven consumerism
- a loss of meaning about our lives
- a glorification of violence.
That is, “big business” is slowly re-weaving the social fabric of our culture thus redefining the things that we should value, our myths, our hopes and even our dreams.
Part of the solution to this problem has to be nurturing culture that originates from the bottom-up at the grassroots level by:
- supporting independent labels and artists
- reading alternative news sources
- reconnecting with those in your community
- supporting local artists
- keeping local history alive.
In terms of building healthy communities, we define health as:
“A healthy community is in balance with nature and the resources provided there, plus has mechanisms that allow for healthy social bonding and interaction, as well as mechanisms that provide the community with a sense of higher sacred meanings.”
It should be kept in mind that a completely healthy and
balanced
society will likely not ever be achieved. Even the most evolved
societies in history probably would not meet all the conditions of
health and balance consistently.
